Barry Sawyer elected as new UFCW Canada National President
Toronto – November 4, 2025 – UFCW Canada’s National Council has elected Barry Sawyer as the new National President following the election of outgoing National President Shawn Haggerty to the position of International Secretary-Treasurer of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW).
Barry Sawyer has dedicated his life to improving the lives of working people. His union journey began as a teenager when he served as a shop steward at a UFCW-represented grocery store. Over more than three decades, Barry has held a wide range of leadership roles across UFCW Canada Local Unions, gaining extensive experience in bargaining, arbitration, and member advocacy.
“I’m deeply honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading our union at such a pivotal moment. UFCW members are the backbone of this country’s economy,” says Brother Sawyer. “Together, we’ll carry forward the great work our union has built over the years and keep fighting for a stronger future for every UFCW member.”
Prior to his election, Barry served as Executive Assistant to the National President, where he played a key role in national initiatives that strengthened member representation, advanced organizing efforts, and promoted fairness and equity for all workers.
Beyond his union work, Barry is known for organizing community events and sports tournaments that raise funds for important causes, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
UFCW Canada congratulates Barry Sawyer on his election and looks forward to his continued leadership in building a stronger, fairer future for working people across the country.
