Flu season highlights urgent need for Paid Sick Days Now!

Toronto – January 14, 2026 – As flu rates soar across the country this winter, Canadian workers are facing a difficult choice: go to work sick or risk falling behind on bills. UFCW Canada’s Paid Sick Days Now campaign is calling on all Canadians to speak up and demand action. Workers should never have to choose between their health and their livelihood.

The campaign emphasizes the urgent need for at least 10 paid sick days for all workers. When employees can stay home while sick without losing income, it protects not only their own well-being but the health of their coworkers and the public. Paid sick days prevent the spread of illness in workplaces, schools, and service industries, creating a safer and healthier environment for everyone.

Access to paid sick leave is also a matter of fairness and equity. Many workers, particularly those in low-wage, part-time, or gig economy jobs, still lack adequate sick leave. This gap forces vulnerable workers to make impossible decisions and exacerbates existing inequalities, while contributing to strain on Canada’s healthcare system.

Legislating a minimum of 10 permanent paid sick days is not just compassionate—it is practical. Supporting workers in staying healthy keeps businesses operating efficiently, reduces the risk of outbreaks, and strengthens economic stability.

UFCW Canada is urging Canadians to take action by writing to their local news outlets to emphasize the importance of paid sick days. Public pressure is key to pushing policymakers to adopt measures that protect all workers.

No one should have to risk their health—or their paycheck—to do their job. Now more than ever, paid sick days are essential for the well-being of Canadian workers and communities alike. Join UFCW Canada’s campaign today and help make paid sick leave a reality for everyone.
