International Women’s Day: Celebrating 115 years of solidarity and progress

Toronto – February 27, 2026 – International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated each year on March 8, recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world.
This year marks the 115th anniversary of this global movement, honouring more than a century of collective action to advance gender equality.
First observed in 1911 with more than one million people participating worldwide, IWD has grown into a powerful international movement recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women — while renewing the call to accelerate gender equality.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2026, “Rise Up for Gender Justice,” is a powerful call to action. It reflects the urgency of this moment, as working women and gender diverse people confront rising costs, economic insecurity, workplace inequities, and persistent gender-based violence. Rising up means demanding a worker-centred economic strategy that places women’s economic justice at its core.
Across Canada and around the world, women continue to lead transformative change. From fighting for fair wages and safe workplaces, to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, women’s leadership within the labour movement remains a driving force for progress. Through collective bargaining, advocacy, and political action, union women are standing up for pay equity, accessible child care, strong public services, and an end to violence and harassment in the world of work.
This year, Canada is proud to host the UFCW Women’s Network Convention in Montreal, bringing together UFCW women leaders, activists, and allies from across North America. The convention will provide a space to share experiences, build skills, strengthen networks, and chart a path forward for advancing women’s leadership in our union and beyond.
As part of this year’s International Women’s Day activities, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) will live broadcast its parallel event at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) on March 11 at 8:30 a.m. EDT: Union Women Rise Up for Gender Justice! Registration to join this event online is now available.
On this International Women’s Day, we rise up together. By standing in solidarity and demanding action, we move closer to a more just, equitable, and feminist future for all.
