UFCW Canada delegation strong at 2026 NDP Convention
Winnipeg – March 31, 2026 – A strong delegation of more than 50 UFCW Canada activists from across the country gathered in Winnipeg to take part in the 2026 New Democratic Party (NDP) Convention, once again representing one of the largest labour contingents at the national gathering.
Bringing together party members, labour leaders, and grassroots activists from across the country, the convention served as an important moment to chart the path forward for Canada’s progressive movement. UFCW Canada delegates were actively engaged throughout the multi-day event, contributing to discussions focused on affordability, workers’ rights, public healthcare, and building an economy that works for everyone.
Over the course of the convention, delegates debated and passed a series of resolutions aimed at improving the lives of working people and their families. UFCW Canada activists played a key role on the convention floor, advocating for stronger labour protections, fair wages, and policies that address the growing economic pressures facing workers across Canada.
At the convention, Avi Lewis was elected leader of the federal NDP.
“On behalf of UFCW Canada, I would like to congratulate Avi Lewis on his election as leader of the New Democratic Party,” says UFCW Canada National President Barry Sawyer. “This is a pivotal time for working people and their families across our country, as Canadians continue to face a skyrocketing cost of living, ongoing challenges in accessing quality health care, and growing economic uncertainty—and workers will be looking to this new leadership to take action that they can see and feel in their daily lives.”
UFCW Canada delegates played an instrumental role in advancing and securing support for a wide range of worker-focused resolutions, championing key priorities such as stronger labour laws, defending public services, supporting Canadian industries, and addressing the affordability crisis facing working families.
