UFCW Canada meets with Secretary of State for Labour to address affordability and trade challenges
Toronto – April 3, 2026 – UFCW Canada officials recently welcomed Secretary of State for Labour John Zerucelli to the union’s national office in Toronto for a productive discussion on the economic challenges facing workers across the country. The meeting focused on issues impacting all Canadians, including tariffs, affordability, and the importance of ensuring workers have a meaningful voice in decision-making.
UFCW officials highlighted the real-life impacts of rising costs on working families. From childcare, and prescriptions, to housing, and more, affordability remains a top concern for members across the country, emphasizing that workers must not be left behind as policies are developed to address these challenges.
Tariffs were also a key focus, particularly their effect on jobs, supply chains, and the cost of essentials. The discussion emphasized the need for balanced trade policies that protect Canadian industries while safeguarding employment and preventing additional financial burdens on consumers.
A central theme of the meeting was the critical need for workers to have a seat at the table. Inclusive policy-making where labour voices are actively engaged leads to stronger, more equitable outcomes for everyone. Ensuring that frontline workers are heard is essential to building an economy that works for all.
UFCW Canada remains dedicated to advocating for policies that support workers and their families, while fostering partnerships with government to address the challenges shaping Canada’s economic future.
UFCW Canada believes that political action is essential to winning fairness for workers and their families. Whether through lobbying, building coalitions, training activists, or engaging in elections, the union remains committed to shaping legislation that strengthens workers’ rights — not just for UFCW members, but for all working people across the country.
