Ontario YIP participants build skills, confidence, and solidarity
Niagara Falls, Ont. – June 8, 2026 – UFCW members from across Ontario recently came together in Niagara Falls for the latest session of the Young Workers Internship Program (YIP), a hands-on learning program designed to help the next generation of union activists grow their skills and strengthen their voices in the labour movement.
Throughout the week, participants engaged in hands-on workshops, team-building exercises, and discussions focused on workplace rights, labour activism, equity, and organizing. The program encouraged members to explore the history of the labour movement while developing practical tools they can bring back to their workplaces and communities.
One of the most memorable parts of the session was the collective bargaining simulation, where participants worked through real-world scenarios and learned firsthand about the challenges and strategies involved in negotiating workplace improvements. The exercise provided valuable insight into the collective power workers can achieve through union solidarity.
“Attending YIP was an opportunity that started with a conversation and the encouragement of people who believed in me,” says UFCW Local 175 member Shawn Kaizer. “Throughout the week, I was challenged to step outside my comfort zone, reflect on my values, and find my voice as a union activist. The experience reminded me that when your community, your co-workers, and your union support you, you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible.”
In addition to educational workshops, participants had opportunities to network with fellow young workers, share experiences, and build lasting connections with members from across the province. These relationships are a key part of YIP’s ongoing success, helping strengthen solidarity among young workers throughout the UFCW Canada family.
