Toronto – November 9, 2013 – A youth leader from Toronto is the first recipient of the Wayne Hanley Award: recently established by the UFCW Local 1993 membership to recognize outstanding displays of youth leadership and achievement.

Nicholas Rodrigues received the Wayne Hanley Award for his exceptional commitment to education and community work to the applause of several hundred UFCW Canada activists, friends, family members and community allies during the Annual Local 1993 Year-end Dinner and Dance, recently held in Toronto as a fundraiser for leukemia and sickle cell disease research.

Local 1993 also took the opportunity to thank retiring UFCW Canada Local 1000A representative Mike Derrick for his many years of service to the union, and to various community outreach initiatives, including UFCW Canada’s leading role in Toronto’s annual Caribana festival.

Long-time community partner, and Caribana legend, Louis Saldenah also joined the fundraiser to celebrate the union’s fundraising and community outreach achievements and to acknowledge UFCW Canada’s unwavering commitment to one of the country’s leading cultural festivals.

Local 1993 is also a key sponsor of the Camp Jumoke Organization, which serves the needs of hundreds of children across Canada afflicted with Sickle Cell Disease. In light of the union’s continuing support of Camp Jumoke and its efforts, representatives from the community organization joined this year’s fun-filled event to present Local 1993 and the national office with a special plaque to thank the union for its ongoing support.
