UFCW Canada joins the call for Transgender Rights

Toronto – June 23, 2014 – UFCW Canada welcomes news that a human rights victory may be close at hand for transgender Canadians. Bill C-279 is close to becoming law – legislation that will finally ensure transgender Canadians are protected from hate crimes under the Criminal Code and guarantee their right to equality under the Canadian Human Rights Act. The bill was first introduced by British Colombia NDP MP Randall Garrison in 2011. It is one of very few opposition MP’s private members bill in recent history to be passed by the House of Commons.

The necessity to enshrine transgender rights in human rights law is urgent. The rate of discrimination and violence against transgender Canadians is appallingly high:

As Canada’s most progressive union, UFCW Canada fights for transgender rights in the workplace, in collective bargaining, and in the streets. As part of World Pride 2014, the biggest Pride Toronto ever, our union activists will be travelling from across Canada and the United States to participate in the Trans Rally and March on June 27. Of all the many exciting events during World Pride 2014, the Trans March stands out as a distinctly grassroots experience that draws activists from diverse backgrounds, movements and communities.
