UFCW Locals 5 and 881 sign groundbreaking labour and human rights agreement with Government of Michoacan, Mexico

Improving labour and human rights of Michoacanos living and working in California and Chicago a shared goal of UFCW and Michoacan government

Hayward, California and Chicago, Illinois – July 2, 2014 – UFCW Locals 5 and 881 recently met with officials from the Government of Michoacan, Mexico to sign a groundbreaking agreement that will provide training, advocacy information services, and monitoring efforts to improve the human and labour rights of Michoacanos living and working in California and Chicago.

First collective agreement for agriculture workers at Ferme B. Cousineau et fils

Saint-Roch-de-l'Achigan, Que. – June 18, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 501 members working at Ferme B. Cousineau et fils have secured their first collective agreement following a ruling by a Labour Relations Commission arbitrator. The three-year contract is effective until spring 2017.

AWA organizes popular Summer Festival with community partners

Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ont. – ­­June 12, 2014 – Earlier this month, hundreds of migrant agriculture workers from Mexico, Jamaica, Central America, and the Caribbean joined with community activists for the Summer Festival for Migrant Farm Workers in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario. The social and educational event was organized by the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) and the Niagara Migrant Worker Interest Group.

International scholars join with Agriculture Workers Alliance in Virgil

Virgil, Ont. – ­­June 6, 2014 – The Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA) Virgil Support Centre recently hosted a multicultural barbeque with activists and academics from around the world, who are part of the Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Canadian Association for Studies in International Development.

Juan Ariza, Hampstead survivor, a true fighter for migrant workers

Toronto – ­­May 12, 2014 – Juan Ariza is not only a survivor – he is a fighter. On February 6, 2012, he and two other migrant workers survived a horrific traffic accident near Hampstead, Ontario, when the van they were travelling in collided with another vehicle. Ten of Juan's colleagues were killed, along with the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident.

Ontario Catholic Bishops speak out for agriculture workers

Toronto – May 9, 2014 – The Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario (ACBO) has released a report supporting the call for equitable access for agriculture workers to the same labour rights and workplace benefits as other workers in Ontario.
