Profiles of the nominators for the 2011 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships

In 2010, UFCW Canada created the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarships to provide financial assistance to migrant workers’ children in sending countries, as a means to pursue their studies, and to fulfill the dreams that began when their fathers or mothers made the decision to migrate to Canada in order to improve their families’ lives.

UFCW Canada/ AWA Quebec victory for Guatemalan migrant workers

Thanks to the efforts of UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Alliance (AWA), Guatemalan migrant agriculture workers across Quebec will share in a $250,000 settlement. The settlement comes in the wake of complaints filed by the AWA St-Remi Support Centre in 2009 and 2010 with the Quebec Labour Standards Board, originally on behalf of 40 Guatemalan migrant workers at a Quebec agriculture operation whose housing deductions exceeded the provincial maximum of $20 a week.

UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Family Support Fund to close on July 31, 2012

It's Not Too Late to Donate!

The UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Family Support Fund, set up to support the families of the 11 deceased workers and three survivors of a horrific February collision near Hampstead, Ontario, is set to close on July 31, 2012. After this date it will not be possible to donate to the fund.

Toronto’s Inti Raymi a Great Achievement for the San Lorenzo and Migrant Worker Communities

UFCW Canada was delighted to take part in Toronto’s recent Inti Raymi festival where thousands of individuals from the San Lorenzo Latin American community attended the lively event this past weekend. The occasion celebrated Toronto’s Latin culture and featured international foods, local artists and live music.

Fact-finding mission gathers Mexico migrant worker blacklisting evidence in B.C.

Recently, a United Latinos of UFCW committee of inquiry returned from a fact-finding mission in the agriculture area of the B.C. Lower Mainland. What the committee was told by workers and advocates supported allegations now in front of the B.C. Labour Board that the Mexico consular service in Vancouver had blacklisted some its own citizens working in Canada suspected of being union supporters.
