Toronto – March 13, 2014 – March is Migrant Worker Awareness Month. Students Against Migrant Exploitation (S.A.M.E.) and UFCW Canada have taken the message on the road — engaging, educating and empowering thousands of students since the tour began in March.
Toronto - March 10, 2014 – For Canadian Agricultural Safety Week – March 9-15, 2014, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) have set the theme as “Let’s Talk About It”. Yet, once again these two industry lobby groups have excluded from the conversation direct calls for legislative and regulatory safety provisions for the agriculture sector. It is a fatal and shameful exclusion in the face of the facts the industry and governments are well aware of.
Montreal – March 5, 2014 – UFCW Canada, which has been advocating for respect and the recognition of agriculture workers' rights in Quebec for nearly five years, is pleased with the provincial government's decision to grant seasonal agriculture workers the same rights as all workers in Quebec, including, in particular, the right to join a union.
Mexico City – March 3, 2014 – UFCW Canada and other leaders from the migrant workers' rights movement have requested a Thematic Hearing at the 150th regular session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The hearing is requested to highlight the responsibility of states of origin in the violation of temporary workers' labour rights, specifically during the process of selection, recruitment, hiring, monitoring and return, when traveling to the U.S. or Canada on temporary work visas.
Mexico City, Mexico – February 21, 2014 – The NAFTA Summit held in Toluca, Mexico on February 19 should have marked the beginning of a new dialogue between Mexico and Canada: a dialogue that fosters unconditional respect for the labour rights of all migrant workers.
Mexico City, Mexico – February 19, 2014 – The NAFTA Summit, starting today in Toluca on February 19, leaves a bitter taste for Mexican migrant farm workers in Canada. To properly celebrate Barack Obama’s and Stephen Harper’s visit, Mexico has decided to relaunch its legal battle against the right of association for its own citizens in Canada.
