The Black Eagle Award was established to recognize exceptional individuals and organizations for making outstanding contributions for their groundbreaking social justice work on behalf of Canada's agricultural workforce.

The Black Eagle Award was established to recognize exceptional individuals and organizations for making outstanding contributions for their groundbreaking social justice work on behalf of Canada's agricultural workforce.

Since 2000, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Canada and the Agricultural Workers Alliance (AWA) have hosted the "Annual Cesar E. Chavez Black Eagle Awards Dinner."

Some of the past recipients include:

• Howard Pawley, past Manitoba's Premier
• Olivia Chow, MP and Immigration Critic for the Federal NDP Caucus
• Jean Lashley, member of "El Sembrador"
• Patricia Perez, TUAC Canada Organizer
• Min Sook Lee, Producer of the National Film Board documentary "El Contrato"
• Lionel Godoy, Governor of the Mexican State of Michoacán
• Gill McGowan, President of the Alberta Federation of Labour
• Ken Georgetti, Canadian Labour of Congress President
• Wayne Samuelson, Ontario Federation of Labour past President
• James Clancy, National Union of Provincial Government Employees President
• Teresa Ferrier, farm worker widow
• Chin Liu, farm worker who was the legal challenger for Health and Safety and the Right to Bargain Collectively in Ontario
• Paul Cavalluzzo, lead Lawyer for Legal Challenge for farm workers to Bargain Collectively in Ontario

The unwavering commitment of past (and future) recipients whom have helped to improving the lives of workers is truly in keeping with Cesar's courageous pursuit of social and economic justice and passion for community, fairness and collective action. It is in this spirit that each year we come together to celebrate the indomitable spirit of Cesar Chavez and the people who help his legacy to live on and gain strength with each new victory.
