Health care workers at Forestview Retirement Residence join the union – UFCW 175
Toronto – April 3, 2020 – Health care workers at the Forestview Retirement Residence in Toronto are the newest members of UFCW Local 175 after recently voting to join the union.
The 45 full-time and 8 part-time health care employees at Forestview Retirement Residence work as Resident Services Attendants, Servers, Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Housekeepers, Reception and Kitchen Staff, and in Maintenance.
They joined the union to gain the benefits already enjoyed by unionized health care workers at other, comparable facilities. The Forestview Retirement workers also hope to improve wages and benefits, ensure job security, and implement proper health and safety practices.
“Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the crisis facing our health care facilities, it is more important than ever that working people have a strong voice in the workplace,” says UFCW Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty. “Making the decision to stand up for your rights and vote for union representation is not easy, and I commend the Forestview Retirement workers for staying resilient in their campaign to unionize. Welcome to your union."
