A campaign backed by UFCW activists from both sides of the Canada-U.S. border was in full force in Vancouver recently, where the U.S. multinational grocery chain Whole Foods held its annual shareholders’ meeting on March 8.
UFCW Canada added international profile to its campaign to achieve collective bargaining rights for Ontario’s
agriculture workers when, on March 23, it filed a formal complaint with the International Labour Organization (ILO), based in Geneva, Switzerland.
A strike at a number of Maxi stores in eastern Quebec began recently, just as members in rural Alberta ratified a contract
with Real Canadian Superstore (RCSS). Both RCSS and Maxi (the latter as part of Provigo) are banners of Loblaw
Companies Limited (LCL).
