On October 13, UFCW Canada is sponsoring the world premiere of Portrait of Resistance: The Art & Activism of Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge — a documentary about two veteran Toronto artists-activists whose works deliver a political message.
For more than three decades, Condé and Beveridge have injected their social consciousness into precisely staged and constructed photomontages to raise awareness about many critical issues such as the importance of the labour movement, the threat of free trade and globalization, the endangered environment, and the exploitation of migrant workers in Canada.
"We're honoured to sponsor this documentary portrait of Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge who have devoted their artistic careers and their personal lives to fighting for positive change and the issues that matter to working people," says Wayne Hanley, the national president of UFCW Canada. "Their work is a powerful wake-up call and inspiration to get engaged in politics, the labour movement and the community."
Portrait of Resistance is produced by Canadian film makers Roz Owen and Jim Miller. The documentary screening is part of the 12th Annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival to be held at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum.
On November 2, Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge will also be honoured at the 12th Annual Caesar E. Chavez Black Eagle Awards for their artist-activist projects including Salt of the Earth, which have raised awareness about the plight of migrant workers in Canada.
