UFCW 1006A hosts first-ever stewards' conference

Vaughan, Ont. – December 12, 2016 – UFCW Canada Local 1006A’s first-ever stewards’ conference was a great success, bringing together stewards from cities and sectors across Ontario.

The recent growth and transformation of Local 1006A was on full display at the conference, with activists participating from the restaurant, hotel, industrial, food retail, manufacturing, transportation, warehouse, and processing sectors, among others.

Centred on the theme of “My Union, Our Union,” the conference focused on building a stronger, more dynamic, and more inclusive Local Union, and featured informative and engaging presentations that addressed this theme.

“Our union is stronger and more diverse than it has ever been, and I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together, and the direction that we are heading in,” UFCW Canada Local 1006A President Wayne Hanley told the audience. “Increasing member engagement is crucial to strengthening our union now and in the future, and when we step up and own our role as activists, we empower all members,” he added.

During the conference, activists heard from UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema, who praised UFCW Canada Local 1006A for its leadership, member engagement, and e-board work over the last few years. The conference attendees also raised thousands of dollars for the life-saving work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).

Shawn Rampersad, a Local 1006A steward from Maple Leaf Food Canning, said the conference was educational and eye-opening. 

"This is very well put together. I have never been to a conference like this one before. I feel pretty special being here. To see this kind of solidarity is amazing,” he said.

La Toya Grey, who works at Francois’ No Frills, said the conference was informative, and marked a new beginning for Local 1006A.

“Coming out of this conference, we have the ability to make positive changes in our workplaces and in our communities. Local 1006A is my family,” she remarked.
