Mobilizing aid for Chile
Barely a month-and-a-half removed from Haiti’s devastating earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands, another shattering earthquake has left Chile in what its government deems “a state of catastrophe.” The 8.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded, has left hundreds of thousands of people affected in Chile and abroad.
In the wake of the tragedy, thousands of Chilean Canadians – many of whom are UFCW Canada members – are trying desperately to come to the aid of loved ones in Chile.
“As Canada’s largest private-sector union, UFCW Canada stands with Chile and all Chilean Canadians, and we call upon our more than 250,000 members as well as local unions to donate what they can to humanitarian organizations that have mobilized to provide assistance,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley.
“As an organization that was quick to respond with relief for Haiti, and that firmly believes in helping those in need, we will stand hand-in-hand with Chile throughout relief efforts.”
