The Union for Agricultural Workers – UFCW Canada
For more than three decades, UFCW Canada has led the way to bring justice, safety, seniority, and better wages to workers in the agriculture sector. UFCW fights for fundamental labour rights and decent work for all agri-food workers: the right to join a union is a fundamental right for all workers.
In 2017, the Government of Canada ratified core ILO convention 98 on the Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining Convention, which guarantees agricultural workers the right to join a union.
Primary agriculture workers in Canada are predominantly migrants, and UFCW supports its migrant members. Our union lobbied the Federal government to create the Agri-Food Pilot, allowing for pathways for permanent residency for migrant food workers. This allows our members to bring their families, lay down roots, and realize the dream of becoming Canadian. UFCW Canada supports its members through the process of obtaining permanent residency via our Migrant Member Support Program.
UFCW representation at greenhouses, mushroom farms, cannabis and other agricultural operations provide both domestic and migrant agricultural workers with the best wages and workplace protections in the industry.
UFCW Canada continues to push in Ottawa and every province for legislation and policies that are fair and just for food workers. On the global stage, UFCW, as an affiliate of the IUF, help create the ILO’s Decent work guidelines for the agrifood sector. UFCW Canada has negotiated agreements directly with multiple levels of government in Mexico, partnering to train and advocate for migrant workers, working with jurisdictions such as the Mexican states of Hidalgo, Mexico City, Guerrero, and Michoacán.
UFCW Canada has over 2,000 members in the primary agricultural sector in Canada: in 2024, almost 400 agricultural workers at Highline Mushroom farms in British Columbia voted to join UFCW. Our members work across the agriculture sector, from tomato and berry greenhouses in Quebec, to cannabis cultivation in British Columbia, to hatcheries in Alberta and Ontario.
