Two UFCW Canada members from Alberta and Ontario have won the union’s prestigious International Scholarship, which is worth $8,000 over four years and awarded annually to eight UFCW members across North America.

UFCW Canada Local 401 member Chau Chin Yo, a Real Canadian Superstore worker in Calgary, is one of the union’s well-deserving winners.

As a student of the John G. Diefenbaker High School’s International Baccalaureate program, Sister Yo was elected to student government and served as a member of Model Parliament. She also found the time to volunteer many hours to a number of important community causes, including the Calgary Bridge Foundation, and Child & Youth Friendly Calgary.

Chau Chin is now studying Biological Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Alberta.

UFCW Canada Local 175 member Ashley Mcvey, who works at a Food Basics in Niagara Falls, ON, is the union’s second International Scholarship winner from Canada.

Also very active in student politics, Sister Mcvey attended Stamford Collegiate and served in the school’s Model Parliament as Minister of Social Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister.  Like Sister Yo, Ashley also demonstrated an outstanding commitment to helping her neighbours and community through causes like OSAID (Ontario Students against Impaired Driving), the Kids Youth Club, and Out of the Cold.

Sister Mcvey is now studying Education at the University of Brock, and hopes to become a French teacher.
