Calgary takes Pride
It may have rained on Calgary’s annual Pride Parade but that didn’t stop a record crowd from participating in the parade’s 20th anniversary.
That included UFCW Canada Local 401 President Douglas O’Halloran (pictured left) who was joined by dozens of 401 union staff and members, and a more than 10,000 others as they paraded down Eighth Avenue SW, celebrating Calgary's gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and trans-gender communities.
“The Calgary Pride Parade has grown and as a union we are proud to participate in it. It’s important — just as a celebration — but also because we support the human rights of all our diverse union members, including our gay, lesbian and transsexual brothers and sisters,” says President O’Halloran.
“We saw how the Harper government shamefully cutback funding to the Toronto Pride Parade. That was an attack and a wake-up call that we have stand together as a proud and diverse community to preserve our rights and to stop them being rolled backwards.”
