NUPGE solidarity adds to Migrant Workers Family Support Fund
A generous donation from the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has helped push the fundraising efforts for the Migrant Workers Family Support Fund past the $70,000 mark.
On February 17, James Clancy, the national president of NUPGE presented a donation of $5,000 for the Fund, which was set up by UFCW Canada and the Agriculture Workers Association to assist the families of the workers killed or injured in a tragic two-car collision on February 6 near Hampstead, Ontario.
"We stand in solidarity with the families touched by this tragedy," said Brother Clancy. "On behalf of NUPGE members, we offer deepest condolences to the grieving families in Canada, as well as those families thousands of miles away from loved ones who came to Canada to support them," said Brother Clancy. We are glad for the opportunity to join with the other Fund donors to assist the families in their time of need."
l00% of the monies collected by Migrant Workers Family Support Fund will be divided into fourteen equal portions, and with the help of the Peruvian Consul General's office in Toronto, will be distributed to the families of the workers who were killed or injured, including 13 migrant agriculture workers and the driver of a transport truck who also died in the collision.
"We are grateful to NUPGE and the hundreds of other donors and labour allies who have responded to the Fund to date," says UFCW Canada national president Wayne Hanley. "The heartfelt momentum continues to build as all of us continue our efforts to help these families who have lost so much."
