Woodbridge, Ont. – October 30, 2014 - UFCW activists and family members from Local 1000A participated in the annual Light the Night events in Ottawa, Toronto and London to help raise funds and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).

Participants gathered at three separate events, the first at Ottawa's Marion Dewar Plaza on October 18, the second at Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square on October 22, and the third at London's Victoria Park on October 25, carrying lanterns symbolizing the light in the dark world of cancer.

"The fight against leukemia and lymphoma is a cause very close to our hearts," said Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer, who participated in the Toronto walk. "We carry the hopes, struggles and prayers of those suffering with this deadly disease with us as we walk for a cure."

With less than four weeks of planning, Local union members, activists, staff and officers raised more than $3,000 for their first ever Light the Night events and are aiming to raise even more next year. "On behalf of Local 1000A, I want to thank our members, activists and staff for their incredible support of this very worthy cause,” said Sister Sawyer. "I am hopeful that each year, more participants will join the UFCW team at the various walks, as together, we are making a difference in lives of those affected by leukemia and lymphoma.”

There are currently over 100,000 people who are living with or are a survivor of a blood cancer in Canada.

The Light The Night walk is an annual event in which teams of families, friends, co-workers and local and national corporations come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC). Since 1985, UFCW Canada has raised more than $28 million for the life changing work of the LLSC.
