Toronto – December 10, 2014 – UFCW 1000A activists from across the Toronto-area recently gathered for the annual UFCW Canada Local 1000A Bowl for a Cure tournament in support of finding a cure for sickle cell disease (SCD).

Their combined efforts raised more than $2,500 for Faces of Our Children, an organization that raises awareness and funds in the fight against SCD.

"Thanks to all those who participated for yet another successful year," said Local 1000A's Jonathan Lobo, who coordinated the event. "With your support, we are on track to finding a cure for sickle cell anemia and other sickle cell diseases."

Sickle cell is a blood disorder which leads to red blood cells getting stuck in the blood vessels. As a result, much-need blood and oxygen get blocked from nourishing vital organs. The Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada estimates that every year in Canada, one in every 2,500 babies are born with sickle cell disease. An estimated 4,000 people in Canada have SCD.
