UFCW 832 members awarded the crown for World Whisky of the Year
Gimli, Man. – November 26, 2015 – UFCW Canada Local 832 members working at the Crown Royal distillery in Gimli, Manitoba can proudly make the claim they produce the world's best whisky, according to an annual survey of the world’s top ryes, bourbons, scotches, and other whiskies.
Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye, launched just two months ago, has been named the 2016 World Whisky of the Year, marking the first time a Canadian whisky has received the honour. The latest whisky to bear the Crown Royal label scored 97.5 out of 100 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, one of the world's top whisky guides.
Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye is a spicier version of the traditional Crown Royal blend, which has been produced at the Gimli distillery since 1939 and is the sole production source of the world famous Canadian whisky and its newest cousin in the Crown Royal family. The Crown Royal brand and the Gimli distillery are owned by Diageo PLC.
“Congratulations to the members at Diageo in Gimli,” says UFCW Canada Local 832 President Jeff Traeger. “We’re proud that thanks to UFCW Canada Local 832 members, folks around the world can enjoy the world’s best whisky, union made right here in Manitoba.”
