Covered Bridge Facebook page gets crunched by public outrage

Hartland, N.B. – January 11, 2016 – Public outrage has driven Covered Bridge Potato Chips to take down its Facebook page to hide comments blasting the company for refusing to negotiate a fair contract with its workers.

Covered Bridge pulled the plug on its Facebook site, following the launch of a UFCW Canada national social media and advertising campaign calling on the company to return to the bargaining table to negotiate a fair contract. Since the launch, hundreds of letters, posts, comments, and news reports have been published and shared calling out the company for its behaviour, including five violations of the New Brunswick Labour and Employment Act since workers formed a union at the plant in 2013.

UFCW Canada Local 1288P members were forced out on strike on January 5, because over the past two years the owners of Covered Bridge have said “NO” to paying a fair living wage and recognizing basic workplace rights.

UFCW Canada has called on activists and the broader public to not buy Covered Bridge potato Chips until the strike is over, and people have responded.  Add your support to the Campaign for Fairness at Covered Bridge Potato Chips by visiting ufcw.ca/covered bridge.

Covered Bridge Potato Chips has miscalculated the resolve of the striking workers. The message has been heard loud and clear. UFCW Canada, allies and consumers will continue to demand the company respect the workers and return to the bargaining table negotiate a fair first contract.
