Migrant Workers Scholarship nominator profile: Zenaida Angeles

Wellington, P.E.I. – May 26, 2016 – Zenaida Angeles is one of twenty successful nominators for the 2015 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship. Zeny nominated her niece, Jasmine Villarreal, as the recipient of the scholarship. She is currently in Grade 4.

Sister Angeles came to Canada in April 2012 and her husband and children live in the Philippines. She works at the Acadian Fisherman’s Co-op in Wellington, Prince Edward Island.

Since coming to work in Canada, Zeny has been very active in the fight for migrant workers’ rights. She has attended various events aimed at raising awareness of migrant workers’ struggles in Canada, and recently participated in a panel on temporary foreign workers’ rights at the “Equal in Dignity – Equal in Rights” event in Charlottetown, which was sponsored by UFCW Canada.

Zeny had the following to say about her niece winning a UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship:

“I am so glad to see UFCW Canada fighting for migrant workers’ rights here in P.E.I. and across the country. I am also very thankful that my niece was chosen as a recipient of the 2015 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship. This scholarship will be a financial huge help for my family and I.”

Since 2010, UFCW Canada has awarded Migrant Worker Scholarships to over 65 children and families to help and assist with their educational pursuits.

The deadline to apply for the 2016 Migrant Workers Scholarship program is December 31, 2016. To find out more about the Migrant Workers Scholarships program, visit ufcw.ca/migrantscholarship.
