Toronto – May 12, 2017 – UFCW Canada recently built on its long-standing legacy of community building and youth empowerment by donating much-needed musical instruments and equipment to the Toronto Jane and Finch community initiative known as PEACH.

PEACH (Promoting Education and Community Health) is a community program that, for over 25 years, has worked with youth to overcome challenges through music and other creative forms of expression. The program provides learning opportunities and support for youth and their families to encourage community empowerment in the Jane and Finch area.

“As Canada’s leading union for young workers, we believe it is important to collaborate with forward-thinking community initiatives like PEACH in order to empower youth through arts and other creative means,” says UFCW Canada National Representative Pablo Godoy. “Programs like PEACH engage and inspire youth them to become active participants in their communities and workplaces, and that is why our union is proud to be a part of this initiative,” Godoy adds.

Participants from the PEACH program have also contributed to successful UFCW Canada-backed projects like Students Against Migrant Exploitation (SAME) and the award-winning 100 Years of Solidarity musical compilation.

"We are very grateful to UFCW Canada for this generous donation,” says PEACH representative Ruben Beny Esguerra. "Teaching youth to express themselves through creative outlets, where their imaginations and talents are both encouraged and engaged, plays a major role in fostering positive change in the community,” Esguerra adds.
