UFCW Submission to the Standing Committee - Bill 148

Toronto – July 21, 2017 – UFCW Canada recently joined other labour activists at the Ontario Legislature to call for changes to Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act.

The Toronto action was the final stop of a 10-day, 10-city public hearing tour calling for amendments to Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act. Bill 148 is the first proposed update to workplace legislation in Ontario in over two decades. UFCW Canada and Local Unions across Ontario have worked extensively with labour allies to put forward recommendations to strengthen workplace rights across the province.

Throughout the process, UFCW Canada and Local Unions in Ontario have made a number of recommendations to help build fairness and to strengthen the province’s economy. Some of those recommendations include the return of card-check certification for all sectors; enacting first contract arbitration legislation; and the introduction of sectoral bargaining for retail and other multi-location employers.

"Fair and decent work is the main pillar of a strong and healthy province," says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. "We believe that Bill 148 can be taken further so that all workers have the ability to unionize, as this would ensure that no worker is no left behind in Ontario."

You can join the call to make Bill 148 right for all workers Ontario workers by participating in UFCW Canada's "Get it Right" campaign. Send a letter to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and her cabinet and let them know that you want to see positive changes to Ontario's labour laws. Click here to participate.
