UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship winner: Yunisse Valdez, UFCW 247
Surrey, B.C. – January 3, 2018 – Yunisse Valdezis one of eighteen UFCW Canada - BDM Scholarship winners for 2017.
Currently completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Yunisse is the daughter of Rolando Valdez, a proud UFCW Canada Local 247 member who works at Real Canadian Superstore.
Sister Valdez had the following to say about winning a UFCW Canada - BDM Scholarship:
"My parents have always supported me and my academic goals. I am their oldest and first child attending university, and I know how expensive school can be, so I don't want to pass on my school expenses to my parents. They still provide everything else for me, so I have been paying for tuition and my school expenses since starting university. However, being accepted into my school's nursing program presented me with many other expenses besides tuition. With this scholarship, I will be able to pay for future expenses related to my program that are necessary for my learning, such as practice kits and textbooks. Nursing has been a long-term goal for me, and it took me a year of hard work and effort to finally get into the program and call myself a nursing student. I don't want to fall behind in my classes because I'm unable to afford materials that are key to my learning. I also want to pay it forward to my parents, who have always supported me, my learning, and my opportunity to have a higher education and make them proud. Thank you so much for this opportunity, UFCW Canada.”
Every year UFCW Canada offers a total of 18 union scholarships worth $1,000 each to members, their spouses, and dependents for post-secondary education. The BDM Scholarship was created to honour past UFCW leaders William Beggs, Fred Dowling, and Romeo Mathieu.
The deadline to apply for the 2018 UFCW Canada - BDM Scholarship is September 30, 2018. To find out more about this renowned union scholarship, or to apply online, click here.
