Health care members at Martindale Gardens achieve gains – UFCW 175

Milton, Ont. – June 25, 2019 – UFCW Local 175 members working at Martindale Gardens have achieved a new union contract that provides wage gains, improved bereavement leave, and more. Martindale Gardens is a retirement residence located in Milton, Ontario. Currently, the home employs more than 50 unionized workers represented by UFCW 175.

Under the new collective agreement, all wage rates will immediately increase by 2 percent, with a subsequent 2 percent increase in the second and third years of the agreement. Cooks, Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), and Personal Support Workers (PSWs) at Martindale Gardens will also see a positive adjustment made to their rates. In addition, employees at the 1800 and 3600 progressions classified as Concierge, Server, Dishwasher, and Server will receive a wage adjustment. Servers will also see an additional adjustment in the third year of the agreement. Any red-circled employees will receive 2 percent increases in each year. Lastly, employees who are not permitted to leave the facility during lunch or who do not get a lunch break will receive pay for this break.

Language in the agreement improves to include in-law siblings in the bereavement leave provisions. Part-time vacation will now accrue the same as it does for full-time employees.
Now, stewards will get paid time to meet with new members and introduce those members to the union. Plus, employees will now receive four hours’ pay for completing required training modules at home.

The members at Martindale Gardens ratified their new agreement earlier this month. To read more about the new union contract at Martindale Gardens, click here.
