UFCW Canada remembers victims of Quebec City mosque attack

Toronto – January 29, 2020 – Three years ago, on January 29, six people lost their lives to an Islamophobic and racist attack by a gunman who entered the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City and opened fire on worshippers.

Every year since, community members have come together to honour the lives of those who died in this senseless attack, and to show solidarity with the survivors and families of the victims.

In commemorating the Islamic Cultural Centre tragedy, we reaffirm our commitment to fight against violence, racism, xenophobia, and hate. Strengthened by the diversity of 250,000 members across Canada, as well as our union’s longstanding commitment to inclusion, UFCW will continue to condemn Islamophobia and racism in all their ugly forms, while fighting for workplaces that are free from discrimination and harassment.

On January 29, and throughout the year – members, activists, and allies can commemorate this tragic day by working to ensure that this type of atrocity never happens again. You can also wear a green square – which symbolizes the green carpet of the Quebec City mosque – and encourage family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours to do the same. Green is the colour of life, harmony, safety, and hope. On January 29, lives were lost, harmony was broken, and safety was compromised. But hope remains.

In addition to this meaningful campaign, the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City, the National Council of Canadian Muslims, and Islamic Relief Canada are also raising funds to assist the families that are still living with the outcomes of the mosque attack. You can find out more at www.greensquarecampaign.com.

Together, we can build a more loving, caring, and inclusive Canada, and make sure that this tragedy never happens again.
