Health care workers at Christian Horizons join the union – UFCW 175 & 633
Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa, Ont. – December 14, 2020 – Health care workers at Christian Horizons are the newest members of UFCW Locals 175 & 633 after recently voting to join the union.
The new members work as Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Developmental Service Workers (DSWs) in group homes for people with developmental and physical disabilities. The new bargaining unit will include approximately 250 full-time and 150 part-time employees, including relief and casual workers, at Christian Horizons locations in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa, Ontario.
“These health care workers showed strength and dedication throughout the organizing campaign,” says UFCW Local 175 Organizer Tim Hum. “I am proud of their hard work in winning union representation and I know they are looking forward to starting the bargaining process as soon as possible,” he adds.
Some of the reasons why Christian Horizons workers sought union representation include favouritism, a lack of respect from management, and issues with wages and benefits.
Through bargaining their first collective agreement, the new members hope to negotiate for better wages and benefits, a pension, and job security. In addition, the first contract will help address existing concerns about favouritism, health and safety, and more.
