Global unions raise awareness on regulations against workplace violence and harassment

Toronto – June 30, 2021 – Unions around the world are celebrating new international labour rules protecting the right to a workplace free from violence and harassment by launching a new toolkit aimed at raising awareness of the regulations.

Recognizing that workers and unions face the risk of violence and harassment in the workplace on a daily basis, the International Labour Conference’s adoption of Convention 190 (C190) and Recommendation 206 (R206) in 2019 established that every worker has the right to a workplace free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence.

Now that the convention and recommendation have officially come into force, the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tourism, Tobacco, and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF) has launched a new training toolkit to raise awareness of these measures. The toolkit includes a facilitator guide and an activities workbook that are available in English, French, and Spanish.

The toolkit is primarily intended for union educators and facilitators and is meant to aid in the development of training programs on C190 and R206 for trade union staff, leaders, and members. Easily adaptable, the kit can be used in its entirety or discrete sections can be used to plan specific trainings or support existing programs, depending on local needs.

“The joint toolkit underlines the commitment of global unions to work together to eliminate violence, harassment, and bullying in workplaces and to support those who have experienced domestic violence,” says IUF General Secretary Sue Longley.
