More retail workers at Indigo Chapters join the union – UFCW 1006A
Toronto – September 8, 2021 – Retail workers at Chapters Scarborough have voted to join UFCW Local 1006A, becoming the most recent group of Indigo Chapters workers to achieve unionization in Canada.
UFCW 1006A also represents workers at Indigo Yorkdale Mall, Chapters Woodbridge, and Indigo Square One.
"Our unionization is nothing if not an expression of the deep love we have for our team,” says one of the Chapters Scarborough workers. "It's each of us taking a stand for a safe and more equitable workplace where our voices matter. What do we want to see? Change. Safety. Respect. And policies that reflect our diverse needs and concerns.”
The new bargaining unit at Chapters Scarborough is composed of 29 workers. Key issues include achieving fairness, being treated with respect and dignity, and having workers’ rights protected in the workplace.
“Indigo Chapters workers across the country are coming together to improve their workplaces and achieve fairness, respect, and dignity,” says UFCW Local 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “I want to congratulate the newest members at Chapters Scarborough for their incredible solidarity and achievement in standing up for each other.”
The new retail members work as Customer Experience Representatives (CERs), performing a variety of tasks including working cash, assisting customers, placing orders, and stocking shelves. To read more about the union victory at Chapters Scarborough, click here.
