Toronto – October 28, 2021 – Over 300 members from across Canada and the United States recently participated in the UFCW Women’s Network 14th Biennial Convention, held virtually.
The biennial convention’s theme, “Resilience Through Leadership,” was aptly named as women continue to navigate the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Participants heard from UFCW International President Marc Perrone, UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema, and the two women who hold the highest positions in the labour movement in Canada and across the border – Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) President Bea Bruske and American Federation of Labour (AFL-CIO) President Liz Shuler.
Guest speaker Heather Booth led a workshop detailing the fundamental ideas of the Midwest Academy’s Strategy Chart – a widely used grassroots organizing tool. As well, Rachel Lyons delivered background on the Pro Act, and Debora De Angelis discussed closing the gender wage gap in Canada.
The UFCW Women’s Network also elected a new Executive Board, with UFCW Canada Ontario Regional Director Debora De Angelis serving as Recorder.
Delegates finished the convention feeling inspired and motivated to lead change with a strategy that involves empowering women. To learn more about the UFCW Women’s Network, click here.
