Hospitality workers at Steamworks Baths join the union – UFCW 1006A

by the numbersToronto – November 18, 2021 – Hospitality workers at Steamworks Baths are the latest to join UFCW 1006A after a successful conclusion of their organizing campaign, which saw a majority of the 23-worker bargaining unit vote yes.

“We are pleased to welcome the newest members from Steamworks Baths to our union family,” says UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “This victory is a testament to their unity and determination to build a better workplace. Our local union has a proud history of supporting the 2SLGBTQi community and we are proud to welcome these newest members.”

The new members work in a variety of roles including: housekeeping, clerk, lead clerk, and maintenance assistant and organized around health and safety concerns, working conditions, and to have a voice at work.

“I know how hard we work and I know that none of us deserve to take home anything less than a living wage,” says Graeme Lamb, Steamworks Baths worker. “A lot of us were motivated to join the union because we want impartial scheduling, transparent discipline, health and safety measures, and a predictable pay grid. Workers should never be afraid to demand fair treatment, even during a pandemic.”

The local community played an integral role in securing the victory and to learn more about the ways they showed support and encouragement, click here.

“I am so grateful for the solidarity shown from the community to support these workers,” says UFCW 1006A Director of Organizing Lesley Prince. “Every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and should have a say in their working environment.”

UFCW Local 1006A represents 36,000 members in a wide range of sectors across Ontario, including the grocery retail, food processing, hospitality, laundry, warehousing, transportation, and eye care industries. To read more about UFCW 1006A and its outstanding work, visit the Local Union’s website.
