Advocacy continues to make a difference in the lives of Uber drivers
Toronto – April 4, 2022 – When Uber driver Dee Verma got deactivated from her means of making a living, she felt alone, afraid, and uncertain about the future. That is until she met with UFCW Canada representatives at an Uber Greenlight Hub, where the union heard her case and acted as a support to lean on.
“I was completely devastated when my work was taken away,” says Verma. “But when I met with union representatives, I knew I could share my story and they would do whatever it takes to prove my case.”
After reaching a historic agreement with Uber, UFCW Canada now represents drivers in the event of deactivation. This representation has been crucial in getting several drivers reactivated after being unfairly removed from the app.
“I bought my car solely to drive Uber and after being deactivated from the app, I felt stuck,” continues Verma. “I am so relieved to have spoken with UFCW Canada, and no longer feel abandoned and cut off after so many years of driving for Uber.”
