Community health members achieve historic sector-wide increases in new contract – UFCW 1518
New Westminster, B.C. – March 13, 2023 – Over 3,000 UFCW 1518 members working across the B.C. community health network are celebrating a historic victory after ratifying a new contract that brings real change to a long-neglected sector.
“Our members and other Community Health workers are finally getting the respect and recognition they need and deserve,” says UFCW 1518 Secretary-Treasurer Patrick Johnson. “These significant wage increases are overdue and were desperately needed for these folks who work every day to keep our health system afloat.”
As part of the Community Bargaining Association (CBA) consortium that includes eight unions across the province, members ratified a new collective agreement that will see their wages increase between 14-16 per cent over the next three years and includes improved weekend and evening premiums to go alongside provisions for guaranteed hours in some positions.
Members also received assurances in their new contract that the government will seek to secure the long-term viability of member’s Health Benefits Trust for extended benefits through a new and improved funding structure.
