UFCW family looks toward a Better Future as 9th Convention concludes

Las Vegas, Nevada – May 2, 2023 – The historic UFCW 9^th Regular Convention ended with a renewed focus on UFCW’s unity and values across North America as our great union look towards a Better Future.

More than 2,000 delegates and attendees participated in the four-day convention to debate issues, pass resolutions to strengthen our great union, help make constitutional amendments and elect International Officers.

Marc Perrone was re-elected to serve another term as International President. UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema was also re-elected for another term as Executive Vice-President. The convention also saw the re-elections of UFCW Local 1006A President Wayne Hanley, UFCW Local 500 President Tony Filato, UFCW Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty, UFCW Local 1518 President Kim Novak and UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger as International Vice-Presidents.

UFCW Canada delegates were active on the convention floor speaking to numerous resolutions and praising the union’s work across Canada in fighting for fairness at the workplace and beyond. Attendees also stopped by to support UFCW Canada campaigns at the UFCW Canada booth which was located inside of the convention’s Unity Hall.

Throughout the convention, delegates and attendees heard from Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske, AFL-CIO President Liz Schuler, Captain Richard Phillips, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer – the first U.S. governor in nearly 60 years to repeal an anti-worker law.

“We are the UFCW. We have changed workers’ lives for the better again and again,” said International President in his address to delegates. “We have made two nations more just. We have helped make real and lasting change in our societies. What we do matters – not just today, but every day,” International President Perrone adds.

The next UFCW Regular Convention will take place in 2028.
