Retail union momentum grows as sixth LensCrafters location votes “Yes!” to UFCW 1000A

Toronto – March 26, 2013 – Seeking fairness and respect at their workplace, a new group of LensCrafters employees has voted “Yes!” to joining Canada’s best union and leading voice for retail workers.

Joining over 30,000 proud members of UFCW Canada Local 1000A, the newest group of LensCrafters employees to join the union work at Fairview Mall in Toronto, and join the successful efforts of their colleagues at five additional LensCrafters locations throughout the area – making them the sixth group of LensCrafters employees to recently vote “Yes!” to Local 1000A.

"On behalf of Local 1000A, I am proud to congratulate the workers at the LensCrafters location in Fairview Mall for the courage, strength and determination they showed in coming together to achieve this victory for their future," says Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer.

Other locations represented by Local 1000A include LensCrafters in Toronto’s Eaton's Centre, Yorkdale Mall, Markham's Markville Mall, Newmarket's Upper Canada Mall and Burlington's Mapleview Centre.

“The workers wanted to be treated with fairness, respect and dignity in their workplace and they felt joining a union was the best way to achieve their goals,” says Jonathan Lobo, a Local 1000A organizer who helps workers win rights in their workplace.
