Winnipeg – July 16, 2023 – This week, as UFCW Canada members gather in Winnipeg for our annual National Defence Fund convention, we stand witness to the courageous protests being led by First Nations activists in this city.
Two indigenous women, Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, were murdered in 2022 by a misogynist and their remains abandoned in a Winnipeg-area landfill. These women and their communities have been abandoned by the state with the Conservative Stefanson government’s refusal to conduct a landfill search to bring them home to their families.
UFCW Canada calls on the Manitoba government to take action to bring Morgan and Marcedes home to their loved ones: to honour their grieving families and try to find their relatives.
We demand immediate action for Morgan and Marcedes and their families and for all missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. Generations of governments in Canada have failed to act immediately and comprehensively to reverse the egregious crimes against MMIWG2+. UFCW Canada calls on all governments in this country to act and create a safer Canada.
UFCW Canada stands in allyship and solidarity with our Indigenous members, neighbours and communities, and we will continue to work with indigenous activists to support this crucial effort.
