Montreal – April 2, 2013 – UFCW Canada Local 500 is leading a tour throughout Quebec to engage union members, grocery store workers and community members about the critical importance of supporting local businesses that respect labour rights and build good jobs in the retail food sector.

"With the arrival of massive, American retailers to the Quebec market, the stability and fairness that we've achieved for workers – over generations of activism – has been seriously challenged, and that has a huge impact on UFCW members and all workers.”

To date, the tour has engaged large numbers of union members, grocery store workers, and consumers in smaller communities and major urban centres like Montreal and Sherbrooke, Quebec.

“For every dollar spent on food from non-union sources, that is a dollar less invested in Canadian businesses, and in the development of good, union jobs that play a critical role in the well being of our neighbourhoods and economy,” adds Brother Filato.

"It is time to for us to stick together and turn the tide,” said President Filato during one of the community meetings. “If we all make a point of discussing this important issue with our families, coworkers and neighbours, we can play an important role in building good jobs and, as a result, the well-being and future prosperity of our communities.”
