“We deserve better” says locked-out Heritage Inn member
Saskatoon, Sask. – October 11, 2023 – A long tenured employee of the Heritage Inn Hotel in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, UFCW Local 1400 member Marlissa knows that she and her fellow members on the line are fighting for generations to come.
Marlissa has been working in hotel’s banquet department for over 12 years and has seen the impact the hotel has had on the tight-knit community.
“My department has been a first job for many in the Moose Jaw community,” says Marlissa. “They [the future generation] deserve to be going into a workforce that treats them nicely.”
Marlissa is just one of the many UFCW Local 1400 members working at the Heritage Inn Hotel. Currently, workers in both Moose Jaw and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan are locked out with their employer seeking major concessions such as the removal of negotiated benefits.
UFCW Local 1400 members in both cities have endured over a month on the picket line.
“The employer is seeking to tear away our contract and get us down to the bare legal minimum wage,” she adds. “You can’t live on that, people with families can’t live on that.”
