The company “can’t just take everything away” from us, says locked-out Heritage Inn member
Moose Jaw, Sask. – October 24, 2023 – Parshwa, a locked-out UFCW 1400 member working at the Heritage Inn in Moose Jaw, says that the lockout is unjust to him and his co-workers.
Workers have been locked out at the Heritage Inn Moose Jaw and Saskatoon locations since September 7, 2023 as their employer refuses to bargain a fair collective agreement. The employer is seeking major concessions such as the removal of negotiated benefits.
“For the last three years we have been trying to bargain with our employers for our negotiations through the union, but they are not willing to give us any benefits,” says Parshwa. “And you can’t just take it away from the employees. You can’t take everything away from them.”
“The hotel is running because of the employees. If you are not negotiating, it’s not good for the employer and not good for the employees either,” he adds. “You cannot run a business in this country [this way].”
UFCW Local 1400 members in both cities have endured close to two months on the picket line.
“I have just one message,” says Parshwa. “Support your coworkers and be in unity to win.”
