UFCW activists join in the call to defend public health in Halifax
Halifax – February 5, 2024 – UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) activists recently joined the Council of Canadians, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, the Nova Scotia Health Coalition, and allies to participate in a rally calling to end the privatization of health care in Canada.
Participants gathered in front of the Halifax Convention Centre where an event promoting Public-Private health care was taking place.
Activists at the rally spoke up on the importance of a well-funded and expanded public health care system noting that our current public system has suffered for years across the country due to austerity measures carried out by Conservative provincial governments.
“Historically, private health care focuses on providing services for patients with less complicated needs in order to maximize profits,” says Craig Walsh, UFCW Canada Eastern Director. “Private clinics and private health care services put profits first before patients and before workers. With further funding and expansion, our public health care system can be the best in the world ensuring that all Canadians are taken care of regardless of how much they earn.”
From coast to coast to coast, UFCW Canada represents thousands of workers in the health care sector, including workers in long-term care, dentistry, personal support workers (PSW), pharmacy technicians, nurses, and more. To learn more about UFCW Canada’s role in the health care industry, click here.
