Right to join the union and need for living wage unites Fast Food Workers in NYC

right to join the union living wages fast food

Toronto – April 5, 2013 – Fast food workers in New York City need your help. They are making a brave stand for the right to join a union and for fairness by walking off the job to protest the growing inequality between their pay and the profits of their super-rich employers – like McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut – who cash-in and hoard the profits of a $200-billion industry.

The workers are asking fellow food workers, friends, and supporters to support their campaign for fairness and the right to join the union by sending a letter to McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut that expresses your distaste for the unfair treatment of fast food workers.

“We walked off the job to demand higher wages and the right to join the union without intimidation. By standing together for our families and our communities, we can lift the entire economy and rebuild the middle class,” says the Fast Food Workers Organizing Committee.

Fast food workers in New York City and throughout North America are living in poverty without enough to meet the basic needs. The campaign reports that many fast food workers rely on food stamps and some live in homeless shelters – despite working hard for some of the largest and richest corporations in the world.

This latest action by the fast food workers follows a similar action last November, when fast food workers in New York City took part in an historic strike to demand $15 an hour and the right to join the union without intimidation. Since then, the movement’s numbers have grown and the resolve of the workers has strengthened.

“We're on strike today because we can't survive on poverty wages. A living wage will help us raise our families with dignity, and will also help lift our entire economy. More money in the hands of workers means more money spent in local shops and a boost for our community,” adds the committee.

Support this important campaign for fairness and the fundamental human right to join a union by sending a letter to the world’s richest fast food employers.
