Workers at Guesthouse Shelter join union – UFCW 175

Midland, Ont. – November 14, 2024 – In a powerful display of unity, workers at Guesthouse Shelter in Midland achieved a significant victory in their fight for better working conditions, fair wages, and respect on the job.

These workers, who provide critical care and support for some of the most vulnerable members of our community, stood strong together and won their certification vote. Now, they are looking forward to negotiating their first contract as members of UFCW Local 175 in the coming months.

“Workers in this industry are often overworked, understaffed, and underpaid, and their role in providing safety, stability, and resources for people experiencing homelessness is vital to many communities,” said UFCW 175 President Kelly Tosato. “These workers at Guesthouse take a great deal of pride and give so much of themselves in their work. Their drive and passion to build a better work-life led them to our Union and we are happy to start the process of helping them do just that through a UFCW collective agreement.”

The members at Guesthouse work as intake, administration, kitchen staff, housekeeping, and in counselling. Through collective bargaining as UFCW members, these workers hope to secure a contract that provides better job security, higher wages, benefits and pension, and improved scheduling language.
