UFCW commemorates the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6: The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Toronto – December 6, 2024 – On December 6 each year, people across Canada observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day marks the tragic anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, where 14 women were killed by a gunman targeting female engineering students. The day serves as a solemn reminder of the violence women face and the urgent need to address gender-based violence in all its forms.

The day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to work towards eliminating violence against women. It is also a time to remember the countless women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals who have been impacted by violence and to honour their lives and legacies. On this day, people across the country reflect on the progress made, but also acknowledge the ongoing work required to ensure the safety, equality, and empowerment of women.

A significant event tied to this day is the Annual Vancouver Shoe Memorial, which UFCW Local 247 plays a key role in supporting. Now entering its 22nd year, the memorial features over 1,200 pairs of shoes — each one representing a woman whose life was lost to gender-based violence. These shoes serve as a powerful visual symbol of the lives taken too soon, and each pair honours the women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who have suffered from violence.

Additionally, the Violence is Not Part of the Job: Respect Frontline Workers campaign plays a crucial role in advocating for change by raising awareness and insisting that violence and harassment should never be considered “part of the job.” This campaign works to protect frontline workers—many of whom are women—from violence in the workplace and to ensure their safety and dignity. Activists are encouraged to sign onto the open letter to Canadian businesses, holding them accountable for the working conditions and abuse experienced by frontline workers.

This December 6, let us work towards a Canada that is free of gender-based violence by using our voices to speak up against violence and harassment against women and girls.

Ways you can observe December 6

  • Wear a white ribbon. You can make one at home or order one online.
  • Observe a moment of silence at 11:00 am.
  • Find out if your local union is holding an event, or attend a vigil in your community.
  • Today and throughout the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence (from November 25 to December 10), add your voice to the conversation and share the ways you are being part of the solution to end gender-based violence. Use the hashtag #16Days.
