National President Haggerty meets with Prime Minister Carney

Toronto – April 9, 2025 – UFCW Canada National President Shawn Haggerty met with Liberal Leader Mark Carney in Toronto on April 4, in a meeting in which President Haggerty stressed the concerns of UFCW members entering the federal election.
President Haggerty voiced UFCW members’ key priorities for a stronger Canada, which include making housing more affordable, addressing the cost of living, strengthening healthcare, job creation, childcare and, crucially, the trade issue with the United States. President Haggerty also addressed the importance of protecting Canadian jobs, including in the agri-food sector, at this time of crisis, and the importance of avoiding escalating trade wars which will hurt workers and families.
“Trade wars are a “lose-lose” proposition, especially for workers,” says Haggerty. “While trade tariffs and barriers can be used a leverage, such policies will result in higher prices for consumers, job instability, and reduced economic growth. UFCW members work sectors like retail, food production, and agriculture which will be especially affected by an ongoing trade war disrupting supply chains.”
In the face of more tariffs and growing trade wars, now more than ever is the time to support food products made in Canada by union workers. Visit our Great Canadian Food Products page to explore a list of items produced by UFCW Canada members.
