Members at the Courtyard Marriott and TownePlace Suites achieve new contract – UFCW 1006A

Members at the Courtyard Marriott and TownePlace Suites achieve new contract – UFCW 1006A

Oshawa, Ont. – May 1, 2025 – UFCW Local 1006A members working at the Courtyard by Marriott and TownePlace Suites in Oshawa, Ontario have recently ratified a new collective agreement bringing improvements to wages, sick days, working conditions, and more.

“It is a fair contract for everyone,” said Sharmaine Atienza, a member of the negotiating committee. “The majority of the members were happy with the changes that were made.”

The term of the contract is October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2027 and covers approximately 50 members.

“UFCW 1006A has a strong record of helping hotel workers across Ontario achieve fair union contracts,” said UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “Our negotiators are highly experienced and skilled, and dedicated to improving our members’ rights and livelihoods. I am proud to congratulate our members on their new contract.”

The new contract includes several significant improvements for members working at the hotel. It provides an 11 percent wage increase over the term of the agreement and introduces five paid sick days. Language has been added to reduce the number of rooms assigned to room attendants, helping to ease workloads. The contract also includes new protections tied to minimum wage adjustments. Full-time members will receive eight hours of statutory holiday pay, while part-time members are guaranteed a minimum of four hours. Additionally, the agreement includes increased vacation time and lowers the threshold for earning overtime pay to 40 hours per week.
